Spankies Menus

Spankies is a local restaurant in Cookeville, Tennessee, that sits right next to campus. They have some great food and kindly donate their space for The School of Art, Craft, & Design event every year called Bacchanal, which raises funds for scholarships for the students in the program. While they are such a wonderful place, their menu is lacking, so for this project, I decided to give their menu a redesign that fits the aesthetics of their restaurant. I wanted to give their menu some life by adding spot icons of some of their most popular dishes.

Hershey Annual Report

While annual reports are generally pretty bland documents with graphs and statistics, I wanted to create a document that was professional, informative, and a little playful, considering the brand. I themed the color palette around chocolate and deep maroon-reds, and the bubbly graphics are a subtle nod to the Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme products.

Kransekake Recipe

Kransekake (pronounced KRAN-seh-kah-yeh) is traditionally, in Denmark and Norway, a type of wedding cake made with almonds. My grandfather immigrated from Denmark when he was young, and my grandmother’s father was Norwegian, so they tended to bring these traditions with them. We traditionally had kransekake at Christmas, and it was always one of my favorite things when the holidays came around. So, when tasked to design a few spreads for a recipe, I naturally chose kransekake. I used pinks and whites to relate to the wedding aspect of the dessert, and illustrated the ingredients and dessert itself.

Shroom Magazine

This faux magazine was one of the first-ever editorial projects I did. We were tasked to create a few spreads of a magazine about something we liked, and I tossed around a few ideas before landing on mushrooms. Mushrooms are so interesting, and I knew I could make something playful and fun with them as my topic. I decided to make the cover of this “edition” psychedelic because of one of the articles I was including inside, and had little talking mushrooms to be illustrations next to an article about how mushrooms communicate with each other.

Simple Stitches

I designed this with the goal of creating something comfy, cozy, and welcoming. I am really fond of crochet, so I created a small zine about it, including a free pattern, some history, and tips. The pattern has a written pattern as well as a photo guide to help if the reader gets lost. My most successful idea for this project, in my opinion, is the coffee mug with a ball of coffee-colored yarn inside.

The Mythic Times

I am a lover of all things fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, and magic. This theme was one of my original ideas in place of my SHROOM magazine, but I never got around to creating it until my senior year at TTU. Instead of designing this as a magazine, I thought it would be more fun to style this as a traditional newspaper, with etched-style illustrations. I included an advertising section with some real and not-so-real advertisements that I am particularly fond of.
